I remember in my first year as a teacher taking my students outside for a lesson. They absolutely loved it. It has since become one of my key tenets as a teacher – if students can learn it outside while being surrounded by the beauty that nature has to offer, take them out! If students spend 7-8 hours a day at school, why should it be behind a desk? So, you can understand my excitement when I learned that Principal Zhang has encouraged teachers to be creative in their use of teaching space through the “Classrooms Without Walls” – CWW – concept. In encouraging teachers to evaluate and innovate how and where they facilitate knowledge, I feel that Macduffie Tianjin is creating a platform for students to feel that they are part of a very exciting journey.
So, as part of my Introduction to Poetry week, with one of my Rutenber classes, I saw an opportunity to shift the classroom walls and extend the classroom. We had spent the previous day reviewing figurative language as we looked at the Wilfred Owen poem, “Dulce et Decorum est”. Students had been able able to identify and explain examples of figurative language. I also used the last 5 minutes of that lesson setting up what would be our first outdoor lesson – the next day. That is key. Students need to understand that normal classroom rules like mutual respect and the work ethic cultivated in the classroom still applies.
On the day of our outdoor lesson, I used the first 10 minutes highlighting our learning objective and once more emphasised the value of discipline, otherwise the lesson fails. The objective was simple: Create Similes, Metaphors, Personification and as a differentiated activity for higher fliers, Onomatopoeia – the latter had not been discussed in class, but armed with dictionaries, students who wanted to do a little extra had a challenge. The themes included the sky and trees. What better inspiration than to be so close to these elements, right?
CWW allows teachers to employ so many different aspects of teaching. Firstly, it really empowers students. They could sit on the grass, benches, choose to stand or even lie on the grass or walk, as long as objectives were met. Students learn differently, and the lesson outside allowed even kinaesthetic learners to find a space. Secondly, because the lesson had been scaffolded and tasks assigned in the classroom, differentiation also took place. Also, students were paired with a partner, so the peer learning box was checked. Lastly, it was enjoyable. Call me old-fashioned, but I believe that young learners open up and learn more when they are having fun, in a disciplined manner where lesson objectives remain clear to them.
As we wrapped up our CWW lesson and made our way back to the classroom, I could feel the energy in my students. There is something very invigorating and healing about being in the outdoors and it is even more gratifying for students when they feel they have achieved something. Through actively monitoring the students and helping those who were not finding the inspiration needed, I was able to glean that objectives were indeed met and that all was left, was for students to present their figures of speech in our next lesson, a day later.
When I look back at my high school years, there are many things I have forgotten. A lot of facts. But what I remember are the lessons that shaped me; the lessons that stood out because they were different. After all, education is what you have left when the facts are forgotten. CWW in the International Department is going to give students many moments that, years later, will remain with them.
